山口市で英語教師（ALT　Assistant Language Teacher)をされているサイモン・バージェスさんをご紹介します。一部、取材に同席してくださった他の先生たちからの意見も紹介しています。

This article is based on an interview to Mr. Simon Burgess, who is Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Yamaguchi City. In some parts, voices from other ALTs are also introduced.

 

初めて日本に来たのはいつですか？ 
When did you come to Japan for the first time?

　初めて日本に来たのは1986年。高校の旅行で３週間くらい滞在しました。東京、京都、大分他、いろいろな場所に行きました。来る前は、日本人はなんでも生で食べると思っていたし、他の人と一緒にお風呂に入るのは怖いと思っていました。歴史があって美しい国、という印象もありました。今では温泉が大好き！東京はコンクリートばかりかと思っていたら、実際には意外と緑があったことにも驚きました。
　旅行を通して、日本にものすごく感動したし、もっと日本語を勉強して日本を知りたいと思いましたよ。食べ物も、来る前のイメージとは違ってとても美味しい。ホームステイ先のお母さんが作ってくれた焼きそばが、最初はちょっとビクビクしながら食べましたが、食べてみたらすっごく美味しかった！反対に、嫌だったのは和式のトイレ。今でも慣れないし、選べるなら洋式を選びます。
　当時と今の日本を比べて感じるのは、テクノロジーがすごく発展したこと。1986年に来た時は、ウォークマンが買いたかった。でも今ウォークマンって誰も使っていないでしょう。もう一つ感じる変化は、人と人との間の距離。以前はとても近かったように感じたのですが、今は離れている気がします。お互いが自分の身を守っている感じ。

 The first time I visited Japan was in 1986 when I was a high school student. It was a 3-week school program, during which I visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Oita and many other cities. Japan, was for me, a beautiful country with a long and interesting history. Prior to the visit, I thought Japanese people ate only raw foods. I was also frightened of taking a bath with other people. However, I love Onsen now! I had expected that Tokyo would be built only by concrete, but in reality, the city had lots of green. Much more than I expected.

 My overall impression on Japan from the visit was very strong and I became very motivated to learn the Japanese language. Despite my image about Japanese food before the visit, Japanese food was so good. My host mother one day cooked Yakisoba for me. I was a bit nervous to eat it first, but once I tasted it, I was so impressed how delicious it was. Only one thing that I still can’t get used to about Japanese culture is Japanese style toilets.

 One of changes that I’ve found about Japan between back then and now is amazing progress in technology. I wanted to buy Walkman at that time, but young people these days don’t know what a Walkman is! Another change can be found in the distance between people. I think it was closer back in 1986, but now people are trying to keep a certain distance from one another in order to protect themselves and their privacy.  

その後の日本との関わりは？　
What happened next?

　２回目に来たのは1991年。この時はワーキングホリデーで名古屋に1年半いました。名古屋も良い所で、交通の便も良い。雰囲気が良くて好きです。この時から中日ドラゴンズのファンになりました。名古屋に行って一番良かったことは、妻に出会ったことですね。
　嫌だったのは、どこにいても音がうるさかったこと。電車の到着ベル、ドアの開け閉めのベル、発車ベル、どれもその度に大きな音でジリリリって鳴るのがびっくりしました。

 I came back to Japan in 1991, on a Working Holiday. I stayed in Nagoya for one and a half years. Nagoya was a nice town with good infrastructure. Since then, I have been a big fan of Chunichi Dragons, the baseball team. The best thing about Nagoya is that I met my beautiful wife there. 

 Something that surprised me in Nagoya was that the town was full of loud noises. Noises, like alert bells at train stations, on the streets and almost everywhere.

山口へはいつ？山口の印象は？　
When did you come to Yamaguchi? How did you like it?

　山口へは2015年に初めて来ました。ALT(Assistant Language Teacher)としてです。
　来る前は山口のことは何も知らなかったし、来てしばらくの間も、これといった印象がないままでした。でも、住んでみて少し経って、だんだんと山口の魅力に気付き始めたのです。町は暮らすのに不便はないけれど、都会ではない。田舎過ぎないし、ちょうど良い感じ。暮らしやすいです。
　写真を撮るのが好きだから、綺麗な場所がたくさんあるのも好きです。瑠璃光寺の五重の塔や、阿東の景色もきれい。

　都会はワクワクするし、気分が盛り上がることがたくさんある。オシャレなレストランも多くて、食べ物もいろいろな種類の料理があって楽しめる。交通も便利。でも、山口に帰るとほっとして、暮らすには山口が良いですね。湯田温泉駅で電車から降りると、シーンとしていて静かで都会とは全然違う。だから山口が好きです。

 In 2015, I came to Yamaguchi as an English teacher for the first time. I had had no knowledge of the city before coming here and, even after start living in Yamaguchi, I didn’t find a specific character to the town for a while.  Eventually however, I started to understand the many charms it has. Yamaguchi is a nice mixture of city and country. There are no real inconveniences which stop me living my everyday life. At the same time, it’s definitely not too urban. Nice mixture of the both. Feeling quite comfortable.
 I am a keen photographer and it is great that Yamaguchi has lots of beautiful places like the five-story pagoda in Rurikoji Temple, Hagi, Akiyoshidai and Chomonkyo just to name a few. 

 I do like big cities as they are exciting with many sophisticated restaurants and good foods. Cities also have a good transportation system. After, I come back to Yamaguchi, I feel at home, relaxed and comfortable. When I get out of the train at Yuda Onsen station, it is so quiet and so different from the big cities. That is why I like Yamaguchi.

 

山口の魅力は？　
What do you think makes Yamaguchi attractive?

　・町と田舎がちょうど良いバランス。人が優しくてフレンドリーで、観光で楽しめる場所もたくさんあって、食べ物が美味しい。
　・スポーツ施設が充実している。サイクリングやウォーキングが楽しめる道も多い。
　・温泉。特に足湯が（湯田温泉の）いろいろな所にあって、無料でも楽しめる。外国人は人によっては、他の人と一緒に裸で温泉に入ることに抵抗を感じるかもしれないけれど、足湯だったら誰でも楽しめる。
　・海のない町だと、スーパーで売っているお寿司はあまり美味しくなかったけれど、山口はスーパーでも回転寿司でも美味しいお寿司が安く食べられる。魚だけでなく、新鮮な地元産の食材がいつでも手に入るのは、とても贅沢なこと。
　・福岡や広島へのアクセスも良いし、山口県内の他の町へ行くのも便利。
　・移動するのに、飛行機よりも新幹線の方が外国人にとっては特別な感じがあって喜ばれる。
　・SLは更に特別。

・Nice mixture of city and country. People are warm and friendly.
 ・Many places to visit and good foods.
 ・Good environment for sports. Sporting facilities, beautiful parks, cycling roads with great views and also walking paths.
 ・Yuda Onsen! Hot springs are in the middle of the town. Notable things are that there are several foot bathing places, where you can enjoy free. Some foreigners may not feel comfortable to be naked and take a bath with other people, but even those people can enjoy foot bathing as they don’t have to take their clothing off.
 ・Good Sushi is available even at general merchandise stores as well as at Kaitenzushi restaurants at reasonable prices. Not just seafood, but also products from the land are available fresh all the time.
 ・Good access to Fukuoka or Hiroshima, as well as to other cities within Yamaguchi prefecture.
 ・Having the Shinkansen station, Shin-Yamaguchi station, is good for foreigners as it makes them feel special to take Shinkansen bullet train, rather than airplane.
 ・SL, steam locomotives, is even more special!

 

山口に住んで戸惑ったことは？　
Anything confused you while living in Yamaguchi?

　・税金や年金のしくみについて知らなくて困った。1年目は払う必要がないから何も起きず、住んで2年目に初めて税金と年金の請求を受け取った時にはショックでした。外国人が引っ越して来て転入手続きをするときに、これは絶対に説明して欲しいこと。その他の行政サービスについても、いろいろと受けられるサービスがあるのに、知らないことが多くて、インターネットで調べるけれど、日本語しかなくて読めないことも。
　・道路のラインが消えかかっていたり、すっかり消えてしまっている場所が多くて危ないと思う。ウィンカーを出さずに車線を変更して来る人が結構いて、ドキッとすることがある。
　・小学生が一人で通学する地区があるのはびっくり。安全のために集団登下校にして欲しい。
　・外国人にとって仕事の機会がかなり限られている。山口が好きで、ここで子育てをしたいし、長く住みたいと思っているけれど、福利厚生の条件が整った仕事を見つけるのは大変。
　・商店街に無料の駐車場がない。

 ・Lack of information of taxes and the national pension system. Terrible experiences about payment of resident tax in the 2nd year (in the 1st year, no need to pay) & payment of the national pension. It should be explained to foreigners when they come to the city office to register their moving-in.
 ・Even though there are several services from the local government available, nobody tells about it. We have to check what is available in the website of each city office, but it is only in Japanese in most cases.
 ・Many of white traffic lines on the roads are erased or very blurred. Dangerous in multi-lane and especially at night.
 ・In some area of Yamaguchi City, elementary school children go to schools not in a group. Feeling nervous for a safety reason.
 ・It’s difficult to find long-term employment (or employment with benefits) for foreigners. We love Yamaguchi and really want to raise kids here, but unless we can find a job, it is difficult.
 ・No free parking for shoppers around the shopping district, Shotengai.
